Make sure you contact any hotels ahead of time, both to verify that they allow pets and to find out if they have any fees or restrictions. If you plan on attending any events or attractions where your pet is not welcome, ensure you have a safe place to leave them temporarily such as a doggy day care.

If you are traveling to Mexico or the Caribbean during hurricane season, it’s a wise idea to purchase travel insurance, if it’s within your budget. Unfortunately, by the time a hurricane warning is forecast, it’s too late to buy coverage, so make sure you get it at the time that you book your vacation. For a price, you can obtain “Cancel for Any Reason” insurance that lets you cancel your trip for reasons not already specified in your policy.

Having everything at your fingertips will save you from fumbling around to find your airline ticket, passport, car rental documents, etc.

While you are away traveling, turn off your hot water heater in your house. This saves on energy costs for you. In the event of a burst water heater, it also saves you from coming home to a house that has been flooded for a week or more. Turn off the water heater!

Bring a spare passport photo with you on your trip abroad. In the event your passport is lost or stolen, replacing it can take some time. Having a spare photo is one step on the way to speeding this process up. Copies of any documentation you may need is also advised to help get you on your way.

If you want to go on a family trip, especially during the summer, don’t wait until the last minute to purchase your airline tickets. Purchasing your airline tickets early, will also save you some money that you can use when you reach your destination.

If you’re going on a road trip, bring an extra gallon of water with you. While you may think to bring bottled water, you probably wouldn’t think of bringing a jug. A gallon of water can be useful for brushing your teeth, washing sticky stuff off your hands, etc. You never know when you may need to wash your hands and not be close to a rest stop or worse, to be near a disgusting rest stop.

When traveling by air, always plan to arrive at the airport at least one hour before your flights (two for international flights). Parking, checking in and getting through security, can take time. Busy lines can make the wait longer and arriving late might mean that you will miss your flight.

When you are traveling, try to pack everything in one carry-on bag. Airlines have started charging for things that they used to include in the price of your ticket, including checked bags, snacks and entertainment. There are two airlines that do not charge you to check bags, but they often have long waits at their baggage areas. You’ll save time and money if you can keep everything in a single bag.
